Possums

I live in Leavenworth Kansas. I just planted a garden last week of:

  • Okra
  • Green Bean
  • Pepper
  • Radish
  • Carrot
  • Brussels Sprout
  • Summer Squash
  • Cucumber
  • Tall Sunflower
  • Corn
  • Watermelon
  • Pumpkin (and Giant Pumpkin)

Everything has sprouted and I have been protective of it to make sure I don't have rabbits, squirrels and birds eating my plants.

Two nights ago Mac, my Jack Russel Terror, located a baby possum under my Weber grill. Since the tripod legs gave it nowhere to hide, Mac picked it up like a toy and shook it. It played dead, but was not harmed. Mac was just playing, like he does with a toy. I got him inside and naively took the possum about 100 feet from our property in the alley out back.

Last night, he found the same possum. This time it was behind a plastic outdoor chest we have on our back patio. Mac couldn't get to it, so I got the dog inside and put the varmint in a cardboard box and drove it about 3 miles away where there are woods and I often encounter deer around the road, so I know its fairly dense woods. I gave it part of a taquito as I dumped it out among 3 skittish deer. It was still playing possum when I drove by about 10 minutes later.

Tonight, I went outside with Mac out about 10:30. He immediately started barking at the space under his doghouse. I built it up on 2x4s so the floor would stay dry. Again, he couldn't get to the second little possum, so I put Mac in the house and I donned the leather gloves and cardboard box to take a drive to the woods.

The High Life

When I got home, I decided I would have a beer and sit on the porch for a while as it was about 11. Mac hadn't been out yet, so I let him come out and I lit the citronella candle and a cigarette. Damned if he didn't find another one under our hose box at the side of the house. I took another drive to the spot in the woods and let him go.

Hopefully, my dog and a ultrasound noisemaker will keep the rabbits and squirrels out and there aren't any more possums out there. Why me?
